Monaghan County Council will write to the National Transport Authority seeking an increase in their annual funding allocation for the Active Travel Scheme. The matter was raised by Sinn Fein's Sean Conlon at the most recent local authority meeting. Since the Active Travel Scheme was introduced approximately four year ago, funding has been "inadequate" towards rural counties like Monaghan according to Cllr Conlon.
He says that funding allocations since 2020 have been "small" towards suitable locations which should be included in active travel schemes. Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Conlon warned that rural counties like Monaghan "cannot be forgotten about."
Cllr Conlon explained; "I raised the issue of the very small allocations that we've been getting since 2020 towards seeking out the suitability of locations to be included in Active Travel Schemes. It has been incredibly slow down to the lack of adequate resources. I raised that issue and it was agreed by my colleagues at the county council that we would write to the National Transport Authority seeking an increase in their annual allocation that since 2021 there has only been €3 million a year and that's totally inadequate."
