Calls to get local historic railway 'back on track'

The service survived World War Two.

A local museum is calling for donations and volunteers to help redevelop a historic railway. The Cavan and Leitrim Railway from Dromod to Belturbet was first opened in October 1887.

The service survived World War Two, but the opening of a power station near Lough Allen caused its permanent closure in 1959.

After over 60 years, the railway is being re-laid from the platform at Dromod station towards Clooncolry. Michael Kennedy, who runs the Cavan and Leitrim Railway Museum in Dromod and is involved in the trackwork project, explained how people interested in helping can reach out:
