Cllr John Paul Feeley asked Cavan County Council to call for additional supports for foster families during a recent meeting of the local authority. He highlighted how those who foster, volunteer to do so, and often have children long term as well as for a short time.
Cllr Feeley said that very often, children being fostered come from "difficult circumstances", and families who take on the role, are providing an exceptional service to their communities. He pointed out that foster parents do not receive a travel allowance for bringing children to and from their destinations and their remuneration is not enough.
Cllr Feeley added that he wants the Government to provide "meaningful support" to foster families for the valuable work that they do.
