'The Government have hung the Gardaí out to dry, under-resourced and understaffed'

Aontú leader and Meath West TD Peadar Tóibín has submitted a new Bill to the Dail that if enacted will provide for a minimum custodial sentence for those who physically assault Gardaí or health workers.

The move comes after a traffic Garda had part of his finger bitten off in a vicious attack in Dublin this week.

The Bill is expected to come before the Dáil for the first stage in the coming days.

Deputy Tóibín said that 2,411 Gardaí have been assaulted while on active duty over the last 10 years.

He added how "unacceptable" it is for Gardaí to be assaulted during the course of their duty.
