A Cavan councillor has called for a "thorough investigation" to "demand answers" about why a vulnerable tenant's sewerage system was blocked for several days.
At Monday's County Council meeting, John Paul Feeley asked the Executive "how many days it is acceptable for the backwash from a sewerage system to be flowing into a house before the Council will deal with it?"
Councillor Feeley told the meeting that he contacted the Housing Office on the 20th of December about a vulnerable tenant who requires carers.
While Councillor Feeley stressed that the "council staff were more than helpful and are not at fault", he expressed concern that the issue with the sewerage system wasn't dealt with until "late in the afternoon on Wednesday the 22nd".
During this period, Councillor Feeley says the tenant had no access to toilet or washing facilities.
He said this wasn't acceptable and asked if the Council is getting the level of service that is expected from the contractor involved.
He says this was unfair on the tenant and on his carers who "are not paid to clean up the mess left as a result".
Councillor Feeley called on the Council and the contractor involved to apologise to the tenant and the carers.
He also asked the Executive to "demand answers" from the contractor and said there must other contractors "out there who can provide a better service".
Director of Services, Eoin Doyle, called it a "sensitive case that required specialist work".
However, he said there was an expectation that the work would have been done on the day it was reported.
He said this "clearly isn't acceptable" and added that an apology will be issued to the tenant.
Mr Doyle said a thorough investigation will be carried out and added that he expects a "very swift response".
