We've all seen the doughnuts, the circles on the road before but I never realised it was a spectator sport before this.

A Leitrim driver has described how he saw up to 150 young spectators watch around 30 boy racers perform doughnuts and wheelies on the N54 road into Clones late on Saturday night. Speaking on the this morning's Joe Finnegan Show, Charlie McGettigan, expressed his shock at how young people lined the road to watch the stunts, standing dangerously close to where the cars were handbraking and turning at speed.

Both the Gardaí and PSNI said they were unaware of the illegal activity going on in the area at that particular time. Mr McGettigan went on to call for a safe space to be provided locally for boy racers to convene, like that rolled out in County Donegal.

Without some sort of track and separate spectator area he said, it won't be long until there is an accident in which many young people may get seriously hurt. "As I got closer I could see there were cars parked on each side of the road, maybe about 20, 30 cars parked down the road," Chris McGettigan told Northern Sound, "and then as I got closer I thought 'what's going on here?' and there was a circle of young people - maybe about 100 people standing around and these cars were literally doing wheelies right in the middle of the road.
