An Irish MEP believes a deal on the Northern Ireland Protocol must also resolve the "democratic deficit" in the Brexit accords. Both the British government and EU sides have been optimistic in recent weeks at movement toward a new solution for the protocol.
Sinn Féin MEP Chris MacManus says EU laws impact Northern Ireland, so people in the North must have some way of having a say on what is enacted. He stated; "Allowing MLAs to sit on the UK-EU assembly would not be enough to resolve democratic concerns. "On a day-to-day basis the European Union is going to be enacting legislations and directives which will have an impact on the 2 million people living in the North of Ireland," he warned.
