A local councillor has called for foot patrol conducted by the Gardaí to be increased across Cavan. Despite recruitment and retention issues facing the force, Cllr Peter McVitty believes a more "visible" Gardaí presence on streets will give people a "sense of security" and lower the overall rate of crime.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr McVitty said that while he is "in favour" of more 'Gardaí-on-the-beat' he say it's "extremely important" to ensure that a single Garda is not carrying out such duties on their own.
Cllr McVitty warned that it is "extremely dangerous" to put members of the force on patrol on their own due to recent attacks and that we must "be careful" as to how we go about this at the present time.
He continued; "It's extremely dangerous to be putting a guard out on their own with nothing in their hand apart from a torch. It's not fair and I think there should be at least two going out to patrol at all times due to the times we find ourselves in. These criminals have no respect for the uniform or anyone else for that matter."
