Cavan needs more services and facilities for children and adults with additional needs.
The issue was raised at the monthly Cavan County Council this week, by Fianna Fáil councillor Philip Brady who called for more educational supports for children with additional needs.
His motion received widespread support from councillors from all parties who each said they learned of many distressing life stories from families on the doorsteps during the recent local election canvass.
Cllr Brady said the problems in Cavan and across the country are multi-layered. In Cavan, there is a need for more therapies, resources, buildings, staff, political will at government level and communication from the HSE.
The councillor said pay disparity between HSE occupational therapists and speech and language therapists compared to those in the private sector needs to be addressed. As does college entry for courses in these fields. He also said Cavan needs a second respite centre and a daycare centre.
