The number of fatalities across roads in Co Monaghan was highlighted during a short briefing of the County Monaghan Safety Action Plan for 2023 to 2024. Speaking during yesterday's meeting of Monaghan County Council, Sinn Fein's Noel Keelan noted that 40 people have lost their lives in the last seven years in Co Monaghan - 20% of which were pedestrians.
In a "small effort" to increase safety for pedestrians in particular, Cllr Keelan said it's important to encourage and promote the use of high visibility in anyway the council can. In addition to this, Cllr Keelan noted that "we should not forget" the countless people who have also been injured and sustained life-changing injuries.
As a result, he asked Road Safety Officer for Monaghan County Council, Adrian O'Sullivan if allocating additional high-visibility vests particularly to schools could be achieved. In his response, Mr O'Sullivan said he would "absolutely" look into this request and make contact with the Road Safety Authority.
