A Cavan Councillor is calling on the government to halt changes to the NCT system.
From Monday, on-board diagnostic testing will be introduced at Irish test centres.
Initially, an "advisory pass" will be given if an OBD error is detected, and from early 2022, it could mean a "failure".
The move is part an EU Directive, and Ireland will be the first member state to implement this new criteria, which is claimed will contribute to significantly safer vehicles on the road.
Independent Councillor Shane P O'Reilly says he's a strong advocate for road safety, but this measure is turning the NCT into "a money collecting exercise".
