A Monaghan councillor has called on the Irish Government to establish an All-Ireland Citizen's assembly to debate and discuss the constitutional future of Ireland.
The motion was approved at a recent sitting of the Ballybay-Clones MD.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Pat Treanor outlined that it is the Good Friday Agreement that provides for a border poll.
In addition to this, Cllr Treanor said members believe it is "prudent" to plan and prepare for that eventuality.
The debate for the re-unification of Ireland is already gaining momentum, according to the Sinn Fein representative.
He said that a Citizen's Assembly of randomly selected men and women from all over the island of Ireland would take expert evidence from the economic, health, education and farming sectors, in order to bring forward proposals and options, which would then be considered in an inclusive, respectful debate, leading to a referendum north and south.
Cllr Treanor added that there is an "opportunity" to build a new republic serving all the Citizens of Ireland equally, which would be of particular benefit to the people of Monaghan and the border region:
