Calls for clarity on the criteria required for Deis status for schools were made at a recent meeting of Cavan County Council. They came on foot of a notice of motion that was put forward by Cllr TP O'Reilly requesting the Minister for Education to confirm when the Deis status for schools is being reviewed and what criteria is being used to determine eligibility for a school to be included.
The meeting heard that a number of schools in certain areas in Co Cavan have been granted the status while other schools close by haven't. Meanwhile, Cllr Aine Smith highlighted, how as a teacher she sees first hand the "value" of Deis status at a school.
She added that the hot meals made available under the scheme and the needs of the school being addressed are just two of the many benefits to the school.
