The Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council, Cllr John Paul Feeley has called on the local authority to purchase the county’s Burren Park site.
Cllr Feely says Coillte has mismanaged the site over the last 20 years and the planting of Sitka Spruce trees has destroyed the tourist experience.
He added the trees are contributing to the loss of archaeological points and huge investment is needed to ensure its future viability as a USESCO site.
Cllr Feeley added that people are frustrated over what is going on.
And he pointed out that there was an onus on everybody across the county to preserve and maintain a site of such local and national importance as this.
"As people now understand the site better, that plantation is recognised as being injurious to Burren Park," continued Cllr Feeley.
"A number of years ago with the first phase of development which put in a large number of trails and opened up many of the key sites, there was a lot of tree felling done.
Unfortunately, Coillte ignored the advice that they got from locals who were involved in the consultation of the process.
"They replanted large areas and and now those plantations are growing."
