A Monaghan mother is calling for Bus Éireann to alter the route of a local school bus not only for the benefit her son but other families living in the Inniskeen area.
Karen Kirk's son is a third class pupil at Blackstaff National School in Carrickmacross. Speaking on this morning's Joe Finnegan Show, Ms Kirk said that her son is a considered as a "concessionary ticket holder" which means that the family lives within a 3.2 km radius of the school.
Despite this, the nearest bus stop to the family home is on a minor road and therefore "not safe" for her son to walk on alone, as both Karen and her husband work full-time.
According to Ms Kirk, in order for the school bus to pick her son up in a safe manner, it would require a subtle route change that makes "entire sense" and one that is "supported" by the Principal and staff at Blackstaff National School.
While the route change would make a "huge difference" to her family, the local mother highlighted her "disappointment" at the response she has received so far by Bus Éireann over the matter.
According to Ms Kirk, there is only 0.3 km of a difference between the original bus route and the one which she is proposing to Bus Éireann. She added that although the route change makes "entire sense," it has not been acknowledged in the slightest.
"It just makes total sense for such a small change but we can't seem to get that through to Bus Éireann," Ms Kirk explained.
