There are calls for a Irish language officer to be appointed in County Cavan.
Cllr Aine Smith who is also an Irish teacher has called for the appointment to take place in an added effort to safeguard our native language. She says the education system has a huge part to play in helping Gaeilge to continue to flourish in this region.
The Officer would have a wide ranging role in promoting the language throughout the county, organising events and as well as overseeing the Council work through Irish.
Cllr Smith said that over 72,000 people in Ireland speak Irish outside the education system. The Cavan Councillor says it's about introducing a Cúpla Focail into your day to make sure the language is around for generations to come.
