There are calls for stricter penalties for those who dump waste in Cavan.
At this afternoon’s County Council meeting, elected representatives heard about the work carried out by the environmental section in recent years to stop dumping.
Over €1 million was spent by the local authority in 2019, and despite a positive score in the IBAL Litter League, it was said the county still has "a lot more work to do".
Cavan town was ranked 23rd out of 40 in the latest IBAL survey, making it "clean to European norms".
So far this year 460 on the spot litter fines have been issued for littering in the county, with 601 in all of 2019.
However, it's estimated that only around 40 per cent of those are paid.
Independent Councillor Shane P O’Reilly claimed the judiciary isn’t supporting the local authorities when cases come before the Courts, because all they’re giving is "a slap on the wrist".
