Cavan-Belturbet Councillor John Paul Feeley has called for safety barriers to be installed on the R200 road near Dernacrieve Cross. Cllr Feeley says the safety improvement works could be done in a phased manner but said, in the short-term, safety barriers should be put in a number of places along the route where there is a significant fall into adjoining lands below.
The local councillor said the road is an important route taking a significant volume of traffic to Blacklion and Dowra. Many HGVs also travel the R200 at the weekends to and from Dowra Mart, he pointed out.
"The R200 is a very important regional road in our county from Derenacrieve Cross, taking traffic across to Blacklion and Dowra," Cllr Feeley told Northern Sound, "It carries a significant volume of traffic, particularly HGVs on a Friday and Saturday going to Dowra Mart. There is a more short-term need that has to be addressed and that's a number of sections, particularly one at Bealbally coming from the top of the the Gap back to Glengevlin where there is a very significant fall from the road to the adjoining lands, which, is dangerous."
