Leaving Cert students should be given credits for social work or sports participation, according to a local Senator.
Joe O'Reilly told the Seanad today that the credits would go towards their points for college.
He says this would combine academic excellence with extracurricular activities and would benefit students and colleges.
Other countries already have a system which takes work voluntary and other work outside of school into account for college applications.
