Bus Éireann has apologised for "some poor customer experiences" in Monaghan Bus Station.
It follows claims by local councillor David Maxwell that he has seen photos that show excrement on the doors of the toilets in the station.
At a recent Monaghan County Council meeting, David Maxwell called on Bus Éireann to "step up to the mark" and address the "disgusting" toilet facilities in Monaghan Bus Station.
He said he was sent photos in which "excrement was on the doors of the toilet".
He added that when a group of American tourists contacted a staff member about this, they were told by the member of staff that this was not their job.
In a statement to Northern Sound from Bus Éireann, a spokesperson says the toilet facilities at Monaghan Bus Station have been closed due to the pandemic, and efforts are being made fully re-open the station this summer.
The statement added that in the interim, external toilets have been made available, and while these are cleaned throughout the day, they are not of equivalent standard and there is no cleaner on-site.
Once the station reopens, the Bus Éireann spokesperson said these toilets will be closed and indoor toilets made available once again, and will be subject to on-going supervision.
