Bus and rail fares reducing by 20% across the region

The plan to cut public transport fares was announced by Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan was among the measures included in the Government’s package to reduce the cost of living. Fares will benefit city and town services outside of Dublin. Fares on Bus Éireann’s inter-urban and commuter services across the region have decreased by 20% since Monday.

As a result, a journey from Roscommon to Castlerea using a Leap card that currently costs €7.00 will now cost just €5.60.

Fares on Bus Éireann’s inter-urban and commuter services for commuters in Monaghan will also fall.

A journey from Monaghan to Dundalk using a Leap card that costs €9.80 will now cost just €7.84.

Meanwhile, in Cavan the change means a journey from Cavan to Virginia using a Leap card costing €7.70 will now cost just €6.16.

Online fares at Iarnród Éireann are also being reduced by 20%.

Transport Minister, Eamon Ryan said he wanted to make it easier for people to be able to choose public transport throughout the country.

"I am delighted that this saving of 20% off public transport costs is now being implemented for commuters across regional cities and towns particular," he continued.

“People are coming under more and more pressure as the price of essentials continues to increase.

"As one element of a suite of measures being introduced by the Government, this fare reduction will go some way to easing some of the financial strain that households are experiencing.

“Choosing public transport over the private car, even for one trip a week, can begin to help us reduce our greenhouse gas emissions.

"It will also help improve the air quality and cut down on congestion in our cities and towns throughout the country."
