Local political commentator Sean McKiernan said this year's budget has a "give away feel to it". Mr McKiernan was talking to the Joe Finnegan Show earlier and gave some of his predictions for Budget 2024 which will be delivered tomorrow morning.
He said he expects an increase to social welfare payments and more special energy payments like those we saw last year in response to the war in Ukraine. He also called for "impactful" measures that are cheap to deliver like further reductions to college fees.
Ultimately, he said, with local and European elections coming soon, each of the parties in the coalition will want to stamp their names on policies important to their manifesto. But the expert from Cavan says some of the drama of budget day has been lost over the years as ministers "road test" their plans well in advance of budget day.
