Mrs Bridget Tierney, a 108-year-old Loughduff lady, has passed away. Mrs Tierney, is thought to have been the oldest person in Ireland since January this year. She would have turned 109 in July. Northern Sound has celebrated with Bridget's family as she reached some of her landmark birthdays and over the years, she imparted her wisdom and secret to a long life. A tee-total, non-smoker who lived on a basic diet of porridge, spuds, soda bread and tea, her family said Bridget worked just as hard as her husband on their family farm in Cavan.
She always had a "wonderful faith" and said her prayers every night. Right up to the age of 99, Bridget regularly made the pilgrimage to Knock. Bridget always followed politics and was proud to say she voted in every election since she was given the vote. In one of the many stories printed about her long life today, it is reported Bridget remembers walking to Granard to hear Michael Collins speak.
In 2022, just as she was celebrating her 107th birthday Mrs Tierney contracted Covid but with the great care provided by Tom, Eileen and Kitty, came through it. Mrs Tierney remembered her first day at national school and poetry was always a part of her life.
Bridget, who had 30 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren, will repose at her home in Drumgore on Thursday, 29th Feb, from 5pm-10pm and on Friday, 1st Mar from 1pm-4.30pm, and all are welcome during these hours. Removal of her remains to St Joseph's Church Loughduff will be on Friday evening to arrive for 8pm and Bridget's funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, 2nd Mar at 12pm with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
