A suspected outbreak of avian influenza in Co Monaghan has been reported this evening. The flock has approximately 45,000 laying hens in an enriched cage system (i.e. not a free range flock). The farmer contacted his veterinary practitioner on the evening of the 19th to report 400 birds dead in the previous 24 hours. The veterinary practitioner immediately informed DAFM officials, who verbally restricted the flock and commenced preparations.
Northern Sound understands that DAFM officials visited the holding and took samples, which were delivered to DAFM Laboratories, Backweston, Co. Kildare this afternoon. Initial results are expected by tomorrow morning (21st), with further results by tomorrow evening. It is reported that only 30 birds died today, compared to the 400 reported dead yesterday. This reduction in mortality would not usually be typical of an avian influenza outbreak, although it is still possible.
