A Fine Gael TD says a border poll could be called at any time in the next decade, and is urging government to begin preparations.
Neale Richmond says now is the time to set up an Oireachtas Committee to work through the detail of what a United Ireland would look like.
He says the fallout from Brexit has changed everything.
"I think we could easily see a border poll being held within the next decade," Deputy Richmond continued.
"The results of this Assembly Election possibly don't allow for one.
"But it's not in our gift; it's down to the Secretary of State of Northern Ireland to decide.
"And indeed, as the Tainiste has already said, we need to see clarity on what merits a border poll."
