The Northern Ireland border isn't thought to be contributing to the latest spike in Covid cases.
In the early stages of the pandemic, the varying health restrictions in both jurisdictions was linked in a rise in cases in Donegal, Monaghan and Cavan.
Cavan now has the ninth highest incidence rate in the country at 660 cases per 100,000 population and over 500 new recent cases in the county.
Monaghan has seen it's 7 day incidence rate and case level drop, with the county now having the third lowest rate of transmission in total.
DCU Professor Anthony Staines says it isn't the same situation now as it was last year.
