An art exhibition curated by Rita Duffy and Joe Keenan at the Town Hall in Cavan will begin tomorrow and will run until Saturday September 16th. The official opening of 'Border Biennale' will take place this evening at 7pm.
The exhibition features works by six contemporary artists and explores connections between geopolitical borders. Rita, a Ballyconnell based artist who is originally from Belfast has produced the internationally acclaimed 'Soften the Border' installation.
Speaking to Shannonside Northern Sound prior to the launch, Rita said this will be a small but "very impactful" exhibition of artists who have been working over the decades on the "idea" of the border and the ramifications of it.
According to the Ballyconnell based artist, this exhibition is an "expression" of something that people along the border region have lived with for over 100 years, and even more recently in terms of Brexit and other things. Rita believes that this is something that we need to start "looking seriously at" in terms of how we go forward sharing this island.
"There's a full range of expressions centring mostly on the fact that we live on a divided island," Rita explained. "The border is only up the road from us and it's something that we need to start looking seriously at in terms of how we go forward sharing this island and also the international ramifications of borders."
