Sinead O'Connor was in touch with Bob Geldof in the weeks before her death.
The Boomtown Rats frontman dedicated the band's performance at the Cavan Calling festival to the singer, who died last week aged 56.
He says they were very good friends and some messages she sent him were "laden with desperation, despair and sorrow and some were ecstatically happy".
As a fellow Irish singer, Bob Geldof said he grew up with her family and lived just down the road from Sinead.
He told the huge crowd at the egg market in Cavan Town on Saturday night last that many, many times Sinead was full of a terrible loneliness and a terrible despair. She was a very good friend of mine. We were talking right up to a couple of weeks ago.
