The Bishop of Kilmore, Martin Hayes, has called for an open conversation around climate change to take place at local level. Speaking on this morning's Joe Finnegan Show, the Bishop said there needs to be an acceptance that climate change is real because the science is there to prove the fact.
He highlighted how the issue has caused people to feel overwhelmed and frightened but emphasised the positive impact individual efforts can make. Bishop Martin says there will always be those who will deny climate change regardless of the evidence in civic society.
He added there is a need for discussion and dialogue, particularly in rural communities and with farmers. "The other thing that needs to happen is that we need to make an overall decision as a people, as a world, and locally, between economics and ecology.
"Very often the whole drive is that it's all about economics but if we stay going down that line of economics only, then we forget about our ecology. Rather we should be thinking ecologically and then we can see how to benefit economically.
