Preparations are finalised for the long-anticipated visit of St Killian's relics to the Diocese of KIlmore. This October, for the first time, the sacred relics of renowned 7th century Irish martyr, Saint Kilian, will return to his home county of Cavan from Würzburg in Germany.
A major religious and civic event is being organised in partnership between the Diocese of Kilmore, the Parish of Mullagh, and Cavan County Council. The historic pilgrimage will involve the visit of Saint Kilian’s relics, along with those of his martyred colleagues, Saints Totnan and Kolonat. The three men were martyred after they were assassinated for their Christian convictions in Germany in the 7th century.
The relics will be transported from their resting place in the Altar of Würzburg Cathedral, for five days from 2 to 6 October next when a full programme of events is being held across locations ion Mullagh and Cavan Town. Bishop of Kilmore, Martin Hayes, said the event is an opportunity for everyone, especially the young, to learn about the story of the Saint from Mulllagh: "The relics will be going to the other church in Mullagh, Cross Church, for a short period before then they move to Cavan and the focus there will be on Cavan and the Cathedral on Saturday evening so, we have a celebration there called "Set Sail with St. Killian" with young people from the diocese and choirs of young people including from Cavan Town. That will happen at 7:30 on Saturday evening, October 5th."
