The decriminalisation of cannabis could be a step closer as People Before Profit move the Cannabis Decriminalisation Bill in Dáil today. Party TD Gino Kenny will move the Bill in an effort to amend the Misuse of Drugs legislation.
The Bill proposes to enable a person who is at least 18 years of age to have possession of cannabis for personal use that does not exceed a specified amount. However Deputy Kenny says decriminalisation should not just apply to cannabis.
"People Before Profit is supportive of the decriminalisation model where people are not criminalised for personal drug use regardless of what the drugs is. That doesn't mean that certain class A drugs are not illegal but it means that the person using them is not criminalised," he added.
