The Cavan Beekeepers Association are hosting a dedicated beekeeping and honey show in Ballyhaise Agricultural College this Saturday. It is exceptional to have a show devoted solely to the skill of beekeeping but with a membership of around 115, the Cavan association decided to showcase their hobby and its by-product for other enthusiasts and members of the public to come and enjoy.
There will be beekeepers from all other the Northern Sound region in attendance. Everyone will have the opportunity to sample the local produce and see for themselves the different varieties and colours of honey harvested from Cavan and the surrounding area. The show opens to the public from 11am when they can listen to a lecture, ask questions of local beekeepers, taste and buy honey and wait for the results of the competition to see who wins in each of the judging categories.
Admission is free and the show runs from 11am until 4pm. Seamus Murphy of Cavan Beekeepers Association welcomes everyone to this unique show: "We'd like to see the general public come along and see the different varieties of honey produced in our county and see the different shades and colours of honey - it's hard to believe they're all produced within a couple of miles of each other yet appear so different," Mr Murphy said, "As well as the show itself, the beekeepers association will have a stall where people can purchase local honey, a tasting option and we have a number of craftspeople coming along."
