Uisce Éireann has confirmed that the upgrading of the Ballyjamesduff Water Treatment Plant project is currently in the tendering stage. The utility stated that the tendering stage and cost agreement is expected to be completed before the end of this year.
Local Councillor Trevor Smith, says when the upgrade is complete, the project will increase capacity at the Ballyjamesduff Waste Water Treatment Plant. The Fine Gael Councillor says the system's capacity was meant for 2,000 people but in fact the population of the town is at 3,000.
According to the Ballyjamesduff native, most towns in Cavan require upgrades to the waste water systems to allow for a growing population in the region. Cllr Smith says when completed, the plant will allow for up to 5,000 people to use the local waste water treatment plant and in turn allow for further homes to be built in the Co Cavan town.
"It was over capacity and would have impeded house building in Ballyjamesduff. Currently, the Woodlands Project includes a pre-treatment plant as part of its planning conditions. So, when the new treatment plant is developed, it will be able to cope with the next 25 years growth and deal with a population of over 5,000," added Cllr Smith.
