Approval has been granted for Monaghan County Council to accept the tender of PJ Treacy and Sons for the construction of a new fire station in Ballybay at a total project cost of €3,262,922. The approval was issued on behalf of the Department of Housing.
Chief Officer Dermott Brannigan previously noted to Northern Sound, that the current station has limited facilities compared to those which are requested for a modern-day station. The proposed new site will be located on the Latton-Cootehill Road with access onto the R-162.
Speaking to Northern Sound in relation to the announcement, Senator Robbie Gallagher said that the safety and welfare of firefighters in Ballybay must be "prioritised" and that the new and improved station will be strategic for Monaghan as a whole.
He added that the station will cater for areas such as Clones, Monaghan town, Castleblayney and Carrickmacross, as well as other parts in the West Ballybay direction.
Senator Gallagher also acknowledged the contribution of all those who have worked to bring the project to this stage including council staff and local representatives.
"It's fantastic news and a great investment for Ballybay," said Senator Gallagher. "We're all delighted and indeed myself and my colleague Cllr Seamus Coyle have been very vocal on this for a long long time.
"It's good news not just for the Ballybay and Latton area but because of its strategic location, it will also cater for the entire county covering Clones, Monaghan, Carrickmacross and Castleblayney. It's great news and we look forward to construction starting without delay.
