The Ballybay Clones MD has received an apology for a typo in a letter relating to a fight in Clones.
Members of the Monaghan MD issued a letter following their last meeting in which they express their solidarity with their colleagues and condoned ‘recent acts of violence in Clones town’.
The letter issued in November, states the members of the Monaghan MD ‘condone’ the recent fight in Clones Town
At this month’s meeting of the Ballybay Clones MD, Councillor Hughie McElvaney said this was a ‘disgrace’ and he wanted an apology and for the letter to be forwarded to Chief Executive Eamon O’Sullivan.
Fine Gael’s Sean Gilliland stated that he thought it was a misprint, and called for an investigation into the matter before further action was taken.
Similarly, Pat Treanor agreed it was likely a mistake but highlighted that he didn’t feel it was the Monaghan MDs business and that they should drop the topic completely.
The issue was deferred to the end of the meeting while members of the executive sought clarity, despite councilor McElvaney’s opposition to a deferral.
Following a discussion with the Monaghan MD an apology was issued by John Murray on behalf of the members to say they had intended to use the word ‘condemn’ instead of ‘condone’ and the minutes of the November meeting had also been amended.
However, the issue was not discussed publicly during yesterday's meeting of Monaghan MD
The apology was accepted by all councilors of the Ballybay Clones MD, with Cathaoirleach Seamus Coyle highlighting the need for care when sending any correspondence.
