Local election candidate wants to know what funding is available for bus shelters.

Fianna Fáil Local Election Candidate Martina Durkan has called for funding for more bus shelters in Monaghan. The Ballybay-Clones candidate said if elected on June 7th she would ensure new bus shelters are constructed in suitable locations throughout Monaghan county.

According to the local election candidate, the Ballybay-Clones area is "crying out" for bus shelters. Speaking to Northern Sound, Ms Durkan said that there are not enough of them to keep people dry from the rain while they're waiting to take public transport.

She added that people are annoyed and frustrated and more funding for new bus shelters to be erected is needed: "And, I have to call out here: where are all the bus shelters?," Ms Durkan told Northern Sound, "We live in a very damp, wet climate as we know. It's the middle of May and it's raining. We need more bus shelters and I was part of a group who was lobbying council for a bus shelter in our community and it was being left up to us to identify a location, to raise the funds and we need to know what is the pot of funding available and why are they not being rolled out nationally. It's a skeleton service that exists currently and the people I'm talking to [say] there just isn't enough stops."
