After 54 years and 2 weeks, Co Cavan baker Barney Cully has decided to retire from the family bakery that was set up 70 years ago this year.
His son Brían has taken over the popular Arva business where breads are produced which includes Cully's famous batch, sodas, scones, bracks and cherry logs.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show earlier Barney explained that baking commences at around 6pm the previous evening and finishes at 2am with the freshly baked produce delivered to shops right across the Shannonside Northern region that morning.
Barney said the biggest change he has seen over the course of his long standing career was the demise of small country shops across the region.
The three generation family bakery was established in 1953 by Michael Cully.
While always involved in the bakery, it was in 2008 when Barney's son Brían joined the business in a full-time capacity.
Barney says their goods are delivered right across the region and through Armagh also.
