More and more people are opting for cremation to save on funeral costs according to a Cavan funeral director.
The average cost of a traditional funeral now stands at €6,250, up from €4,060 in 2016. The bulk of this cost involves embalming, selecting a coffin, and funeral home rental. Meanwhile, the average cost of cremation stands at €750, removing a large chunk of the costs associated with traditional funerals. Cavan funeral director and owner of Lakelands Crematorium, Declan Finnegan says almost 68% of funerals in Dublin now opt for cremation.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan show, he also says non-traditional funerals are also increasing in popularity.
"Those 'celebrations of life" are becoming very popular and people are coming to us after the celebration and saying "that was fantastic. It was beautiful. That's what I want". It's the same with the cremations, that people who see them for the first time and they say "that was lovely, warm, bright, and peaceful"".
