The Asthma Society of Ireland announced yesterday that burning solid fuels, including turf, is causing serious illness and even death for some people.
The comments come as the Dáil debates the proposed ban on the sale and supply of turf which was introduced by Environment Minister Eamon Ryan.
Many argue that because of rural Ireland's dependency on turf for heat, a ban would plummet people into fuel poverty.
However, Eilish ni Chaithnia from the Asthma Society of Ireland believes there are people who would not suffer from the respiratory disease, if it wasn't for poor air pollution created by the burning of solid fuels.
With over 10,000 people currently living with Asthma across Cavan/Monaghan, Eilish has called for solid fuels to be taken off the market and not burned in homes in order to reduce the threat it poses to people's health.
