A former guidance counsellor and teacher based in Drum, Co.Monaghan says Arts degrees remain a popular choice for third level.
CAO applications for university courses opened last week and will close on February 1st. Last year over 60,000 pupils sat the leaving cert exam with similar numbers expected this year. Judith Caffrey is the undergraduate admissions officer with Maynooth University, who lives in Drum. Speaking to Northern Sound, Judith says flexible degrees like Arts or General Science allow students to figure out what they like which in turn reduces pressure come exam time
"There's a lot of pressure with the CAO of course, they have certain deadlines to meet in order to be able to do their job. There is a pressure to make decisions before certain deadlines and that can mean degrees are chosen that aren't necessarily the right fit. So, flexible and open degrees like Arts or General Science can take the pressure off to a certain extent because students can think "Well I can make up my mind, take my time, I have 4 weeks to decide what I want".
