Around 3,000 turkeys are expected to be culled this week after a second outbreak of bird flu in a commercial flock near Clones. The outbreak is close to the where last week's infection occurred and restrictions are in place around the area.
IFA Ulster/North Leinster Chairman, Frank Brady, told the Joe Finnegan Show this morning that local farmers are satisfied this latest outbreak has been contained due to its close proximity to the previous site.
He said this was a "harrowing time" for the farmer involved and highlighted how the same bio-security measures will continue. Mr Brady added that as a result of this latest outbreak of bird flu, the date for restocking on local poultry farms will now be pushed back.
"There is no issue at all with eating turkey; there is no cross contamination. We have to realise here as well that this is a crisis for wild animals as well - they are being decimated as well.
I don't know what we are going to do; hopefully some day we will be able to vaccinate farm animals against this. But with regard to wild animals, I just don't know.
