It's expected the Armed Support Unit in Cavan will be operating on a permanent basis shortly.
The ASU has been operating locally since last year but with Gardaí based in other divisions, and began operating in Cavan last September on a temporary basis.
Planning has been underway since for a permanent unit to be set up, with it expected to be in place by summer just past.
Garda Commissioner Drew Harris told members of Cavan's Joint Policing Committee that works are almost complete on the new base for the unit.
Gardaí last year took over the former customs offices in Cavan town as additional space was needed for the ASU and new sex and domestic crimes unit.
Once recruitment and training of new Garda members for the ASU is complete, it's expected five Sergeants and 25 Gardaí will be based in Cavan as part of the unit.
This will replace the temporary unit comprised of three Sergeants and 15 Gardaí.
The Commissioner also said he expects all ASU units in the border region to "grow substantially" over the coming years.
