Archbishop Noel Treanor has died at the age of 73. The Monaghan native and Emeritus Bishop of Down and Connor passed away yesterday morning. Archbishop Treanor was the current Apostolic Nuncio to the European Union following his appointment by Pope Francis to the role in 2022.
He was born on Christmas Day in 1950 in Monaghan town and completed his early education locally. He pursued his third level education at Saint Patrick’s College, Maynooth and in Rome. He was ordained a priest in 1976 for service in the diocese of Clogher in Saint Macartan’s Cathedral, Co Monaghan. The Tyholland native returned from Rome after further studies and served in Monaghan, Rackwallace and Enniskillen for a time. The Archbishop served in serval high profile roles through his life including the appointment of Bishop of Down and Connor in 2008.
