The Requiem Mass of Archbishop Noel Treanor, Apostolic Nuncio to the European Union and Bishop Emeritus of Down and Connor took place earlier today.
The Monaghan native's mass was celebrated in Saint Peter's Cathedral, Belfast, followed by interment afterwards in the 'Chapel of the Resurrection' of the Cathedral.
The Chief Celebrant was Bishop of Down and Connor, Alan McGuckian. Archbishop Noel Treanor died suddenly at the age of 73 in Brussels on August 11th.
Bishop of Down and Connor, Alan McGuckian said Archbishop Noël always spoke with great affection for the place and the people from whom he came, in Monaghan. Above all, his admiration and affection for his parents and the warmth of his family home came through in many stories that he enjoyed telling.
He said he clearly loved his parents and his brother and sister, John and Mary, their spouses, Margaret and Jim and their children and their children's children and the many cousins with whom he remained close throughout his life. He also said he had a capacity for strong bonds of friendship that he shared with so many people throughout his life. The Tyholland native and Emeritus Bishop of Down and Connor was the current Apostolic Nuncio to the European Union following his appointment by Pope Francis to the role in 2022.
He was born on Christmas Day in 1950 in Monaghan town and completed his early education locally. He pursued his third level education at Saint Patrick’s College, Maynooth and in Rome. He was ordained a priest in 1976 for service in the diocese of Clogher in Saint Macartan’s Cathedral, Co Monaghan. Bishop of Down and Connor, Alan McGuckian said today we remember that Archbishop Noël was a family man and much-loved friend of many people; he was a very accomplished individual; a priest, a bishop, an archbishop, a papal nuncio.
