Irish Water has been granted approval for upgrades to the wastewater treatment plant in Ballyhaise.
Cavan County Council granted planning permission for the works in recent days, which include new sludge drying reed beds.
A number of alterations to the plant are planned including the construction of a new storm water holding tank and cleaning system, pumps and access points.
The development, at Drumcrow in Ballyhaise, also includes reed beds which would be used in the treatment of sludge and waste water.
A trial of the system, which it's hoped will allow for better treatment of sludge from the plant, is underway in Belturbet.
Cavan County Council approved the plans subject to seven conditions.
