Applegreen has apologised after a fuel promotion caused delays and complaints in Monaghan town.
There were reports of long delays to road users this afternoon, including a Meals on Wheels delivery.

To celebrate its birthday today, forecourt retailer Applegreen ran a number of promotions, including reducing the price of petrol and diesel to 24.7c for a limited time at selected outlets.

Between 12 noon and 1pm, this offer was valid at the filling station on the Clones Road in Monaghan town.
A number of motorists contacted Northern Sound News that they’d been delayed as a result of the increased traffic.

One person got in touch to say it caused them to miss an NCT appointment, while a Meals on Wheels driver said the delays stopped him carrying out deliveries.

Gardai in the town had urged people to avoid the area due to the tailbacks.
In a statement to Northern Sound News, an Applegreen spokesperson said the sale had been planned to cause minimal disruption, and despite reports of congestion at some locations, traffic cleared quickly.

It finished by saying they were working to keep queues to a minimum, and that they apologised for any inconvenience caused.
