Police in Crossmaglen have renewed an appeal for information over weapons discovered in the area last October. The discovery and seizure of the items disrupted "criminal activity and preventing potential loss of life," an investigating officer said. The PSNI carried out a proactive search operation in the Monog Road area on October 30th and 31st last year when they discovered a constructed hide, buried in a hedgerow on agricultural land. Here they found weapons and ammunition including 10 firearms, a telescopic sight, magazines compatible with a number of the firearms recovered, and, what police are describing as "a large quantity of ammunition".
In a statement issued to Northern Sound, Detective Inspector McCallum from the Police Service's Serious Crime Branch said; "Forensic enquiries are ongoing and therefore it isn't, at this stage, possible to attribute the weapons to a particular group or organisation." The officer also said that while the PSNI must "keep an open mind about the origins of the weapons, there's no doubt that this haul is significant and had the potential to seriously harm or kill." Anyone with any information is asked to contact the PSNI on 101 or Crimestoppers, who guarantee complete anonymity on 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
