An appeal has been lodged with An Bord Pleanala after permission was refused for an 18 metre high telecommunications mast in Kingscourt, Co Cavan.
The works would have seen Eir erect an 18m high structure, together with the removal of the existing 10.5 metre high timber communications pole.
In its original planning application, Eir noted that "Kingscourt is a known coverage weak spot".
It added that the existing 10.5 metre timber pole at its Kingscourt Eir Exchange is "too low and structurally incapable of supporting Eir and other operators".
However, Cavan County Council refused permission for the works, saying that it "would have an adverse impact on the visual and residential amenities of the area".
In its appeal to An Bord Pleanála, Eir says "the era of timber poles carrying antenna has passed".
The telecommunications provider added that "improved coverage is best achieved" from the Kingscourt Eir Exchange.
Eir also contends that the structure is "slim in profile" and "its appearance could not be described as having a negative visual impact" as it's "not dissimilar to common street lighting".
The case is due to be decided by the end of September.
