The Garda bank holiday roads policing operation is now in full swing.
It began yesterday and will run until 7am on Tuesday. So far, 143 people have died in crashes, and bank holidays tend to be the most dangerous time to use the roads.
Chief Superintendent Alan McGovern who is the head of the Cavan/Monaghan/Louth garda division says there has been an increase on drug use when taking to the roads along with alcohol consumption.
He says speed in the region is playing a major part when it comes to leaving our road network unsafe, ahead of the bank holiday weekend. The local chief superintendent says there is an increased visibility on the roads over bank holidays but there is also an increased volume of traffic on roads too.
He is calling on motorists to slow down and drive safely today and over the rest of the long weekend ahead as so many take to the roads. Mr McGovern has this message.
