An animal rights activist has branded an alleged cock fighting incident in Monaghan as disgusting but not surprising.
Gardaí were called to a residence in Emyvale on Saturday following reports of a suspected animal welfare incident.
Upon arriving a large number of people scattered and fled the scene, and after a warrant was obtained to search the property, 15 dead roosters were discovered. A further 70 roosters were found alive and seized by members of the Department of Agriculture. Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show, Gerry Boland, member of animal rights activist group "Animals behind Closed Doors" says the incident is an extreme example of cruelty.
"This is just a disgusting turn of events but I'm not surprised because i'm in the business of campaigning for animal rights and animal welfare so I'm aware that there's cruelty going on everywhere. This is at the extreme end of it. But, of course, we all know that there are some people in society who operate on the extreme end of things and that's what these people do. It's illegal, and has been so for over 200 years".
